Pine Hill Orchards grows 25+ varieties of apples on our beautiful 80 acre farm. Along with apples we grow many varieries of peaches, blueberries, plums, apricots, raspberries, pumpkins, and more. We sell our produce in our Farm Store and serve many wholesale customers throughout the Pioneer Valley. We make our own Fresh Pressed Cider right here on the farm. We also press bulk cider for many of New Englands hard cider makers.
Every Fall we offer Pick Your Own Apples. We bring pickers out to our Pick Your Own block on our tractor pulled wagons on weekends and allow pickers to walk out during the week. Weekends also feature many family fall events!
We grow our apples and other fruits and vegetables using Integrated Pest Management (IPM) techniques.
What is IPM?
IPM is a federally sanctioned approach to agriculture that promotes the use of alternative pest control methods and attempts to bring food production systems into ecological balance.
How does IPM work?
Pest populations are continually monitoredto provide information about their presence in the crop ecosystemand levels of activity. Environmental conditions are also closely tracked to predict when periods favorable for disease development. Beneficial predators and and parasites as well as cultural control practices are encouraged in order to help rebalance the crop ecosystem.
What are the Benefits of IPM?
Reduced pesticide usage
Proper timing of control measures
Decreased pressure for reistance to current pesticdes
Return of naturally occurring beneficial parasites and predators
Protection against excessive crop loss in years of unforseen pest epidemics
Decreased risk of environmental contaminiation
Rapid implementation of latest technologies at the farm level
